One of the most common places to find an ITS is in a hospital. These devices are used to help ensure that power is not lost during a surgical procedure. Other places that ITS's can be found include data centers, factories, and office buildings. When looking for an ITS, it is important to consider the voltage and amperage rating of the device, as well as the manufacturer.

What is the scope of application of Photovoltaic Isolated Transfer Switch?

In utility-scale solar installations, the voltage is converted after the inverter for delivery to the utility grid voltage. Transformers on solar power plants are primarily used to step up the voltage to deliver renewable energy to the utility grid. However, the transformer has some added benefits as it provides galvanic isolation between the solar facility and the utility grid. A transformer is essentially an air gap between two conductor windings. This galvanic isolation is used for safety and equipment protection by preventing ground fault loops.

What are the selection criteria for Photovoltaic Isolated Transfer Switch?

When selecting a transformer in a photovoltaic system, the correct rated power and rated voltage must be selected on the primary and secondary sides of the transformer. Transformers are usually rated in kVA (kilovolt amperes). The kVA rating of the transformer should match (or be slightly greater than) the kVA rating of the generating source (in our case, this is the photovoltaic system inverter). The low voltage side of the transformer must match the output voltage of the inverter. The high voltage side of the transformer must match the grid interconnection voltage provided on the utility's transmission and distribution system. The transformer should be able to handle the power requirements on both the low and high side.

what is the use of the Isolated Transfer Switch?

An Isolated Transfer Switch is used to provide an isolated power source to critical loads during a utility outage. The switch is typically used in conjunction with a generator set to provide backup power to a facility.

The Isolated Transfer Switch is designed to automatically transfer critical loads from the utility power source to the generator set power source, and then back to the utility power source when utility power is restored. The switch contains two sets of contactors – one for the utility power side and one for the generator set power side – and a control circuit that monitors the Utility Power Source Voltage (UPSV). When UPSV falls below a predetermined value, typically 85-90% of nominal voltage, the control circuit energizes the generator set contactor, transferring critical loads from utility power to generator set power.

Once utility power is restored, and UPSV rises above 95-100% of nominal voltage, the control circuit de-energizes the generator set contactor and transfers critical loads back to utility power.
